The Olympics, a time for the world come together and celebrate the human body's accomplishment in stamina, strength, artistry, and skill. Well, until this year. The 2014 Winter Olympics have turned into a pivotal moment for gay rights, and human rights. As much as people are talking about the athletes, people are talking about Russia's stance and laws against gays. With social media connecting gays around the world, we have seen the terror and abuse the Russian government has pressed onto their gay citizens. Now, when the entire world is watching Russia, you have their officials, like Deputy Primer Minister Dmitry Kozak, warning spectators and athletes against promoting gay rights during the events. Now, if that didn't piss off gay activists and athletes, it is started to piss off major corporations, who in turn are now publicly showing their support of gay athletes and spectators at the winter Olympics.
Even, "Obama included openly gay figure skater Brian Boitano and women's hockey player Caitlin Cahow in the US delegation for the opening ceremony for the Games on Friday."
5 Reasons Why Gay Men Watch the Olympics: 1. Manly men tearing each other up on the ice. Lots of body contact. 2. Figure skating, who doesn't love sequins? 3. Any excuse to use the terms fierce, twirl and chasé. Also, it is a good time to start using the word bro. 4. To live tweet through the NBC broadcast, to voice an opinion. 5. Hoping that someone messes up royally, and we then have something to instagram later.
Secretly we are thinking, dear god, when will the olympics be over so Grey's Anatomy, and my other shows come back on and the Oscars are here.
