Summer in California is basically here, and Pride season has already kicked off. For those of you who were dedicated to working out for your New Year's Resolution, good for you! And, for those of us who were lazy, and now have to play catch up here are some of the top calorie burning activities. According to Mayo Clinic and University of Minnesota, a pound equals 3,500 calories, which means in order to lose 2-5 pounds a week, you should be reducing your calorie intake between 500-800 calories, and burning at least 500 calories a day. Most people really only can spare an hour a day to work out, and that means you have to the highest amount of cardio in the shortest amount of time. So, what activities burn 500 calories in an hour? This is based on the weight of 170 pound man, and the values are from Mayo Clinic. If you run at 8 miles an hour for 1 hour, so literally running 8 miles a day you will burn 986 calories. (Which is great, if you can run that fast, and have the stamina.) Rollerblading will burn 913 calories in an hour. The stair treadmill will only burn 657 calories, but increase muscle tone. Ballet, Zumba and other high impact dance exercise will burn 511 calories an hour, but increase isometric tone, longer leaner muscle.
Not a gym person? WII has revolutionized at home work outs. Playing DDR at home on the standard mode for an hour is the equivalent to a cycling class if you do not take breaks. Unfortunately, WII tennis isn't the equivalent to real tennis, and only burns 1/3 the calories of the actual sport. Where, WII Fit Yoga is the equivalent to an actual yoga class.
