Personal Style, oh the controversy! Okay, there is a big difference between being fashionable, and personal style. For those of you fashionistos who won’t wear something that wasn’t featured on the runway, you have already mastered being on trend, and the world of avant garde, couture and editorial. Then, some of you might be looking this screen saying, “What are they talking about?” And for those of you who have seen those men running around in their Prada, and Comme de Garcon, and you think, “GOD they look ridiculous, no one should ever wear that.” Well, all of you are in the right place, because all of THIS is personal style.
SO, what exactly is PERSONAL STYLE? Contrary to popular belief, it isn't the way someone dresses, personal style is the art of taste. Some people think personal style is a way of self expression, which is fine and dandy, but that isn't fashion. Personal style is the ability to choose what you like and effortlessly put it together within the context of your life. Using fashion as self expression, well, that is a blurry sloppy, and borderline tranny hot mess, so we aren't going to talk about that.
Personal style in fashion is beautiful and wonderful because it celebrates you. When you look into your closet, you should see all of your pieces hanging up and think, "Yes, this is really me." Yup, every piece should help define you, and if your taste varies, your closet will vary. For those of you who are stuck on black, blue, gray and sometimes khaki, it is time to start venturing out into the world of color! (Just Kidding, to each their own, no seriously, go buy something with color.)
"I'm a jeans and tee kind of guy..."
Reality check, we all are. The difference is how we wear it. For some, the classic idea of a white shirt and jeans is one of the sexiest looks a man can wear. So, how does that translate into personal style? I'm glad you asked. First off, what kind of jeans are you wearing? Skinnies, flared, boot cut, low rise? Then, what kind of white shirt are you wearing? An oxford, a v-neck, a tee, a tank top, a crew neck, see the options are limitless.
Next time you are out shopping, don't look at a piece of clothing and think, "AM I GOING TO WEAR THIS?" You should be thinking, "HOW AM I GOING TO WEAR THIS?" That is how you define personal style. Mix and match, play around, dress up, dress down, regardless of what you are wearing, it is you, and the rest of the world is going to see your #ootd or #ootn....
The Fashionsto: fashion snob
The fashionisto is the fashion snob, they are the boys who wear daring runway pieces. Usually, you have to have a very slim body to wear most of these clothes. These are the boys you see running around in fur, leather, and will carry a bag. Most of the men work in fashion, and sometimes can be ridiculous, for example Bryan Boy. (haha, that wasn't a jab at him. Just a comment)
Call it what you want, preppy, classic, all american, the list goes on. Whether you are a waspy South Hamptons guy, or a beach bodied Orange County man, this is preppy fashion. Preppy isn't always a bad thing, in fact it is the closest thing to be defined as American fashion, and designers like Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Micahel Kors have had brilliant careers redefining this look. If your closet is mostly made up of bermuda shorts, cardigans, a few suits, polo shirts and tees, this is probably you. It is definitely you if you know what seersucker is, and check, plaid and golfing attire are somewhere in your closet.
For those men who like rolling up their jeans, wear only skinnies, shop at thrift stores, American Apparel, H & M, and occasionally the designer store, hello hipster. So, hipster fashion has become such a broad category of personal style, and basically is the love child from grunge and designer. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are probably to blame for this entire trend. Gay Hipsters usually are those sexy scruffy, I kind of showered, I am kind of fashionable, I'm too cool to care James Dean attitude, foodie loving, blogger reading, I am into art kind of guys. Hipster fashion can range from oversized geek glasses and beanies, to Dior jackets, skinnies and chambray shirts.
Snapbacks, high tops, tattoos, and tanks. When Kanye west decided to go into fashion, and become a style icon it created a whole new idea of personal style. What was once urban and ghetto got a face lift with Givenchy. If your closet has screen print tees, high tops, tanks, and snap backs, and your gold chain necklace is your favorite accessory, and you watch collection consists of G-Shock and Nixon, this is you. Call it hip, call it trendy, call it what you will... Unfortunately, because of the world of IG, you have now hash tagged yourself as #fagswag.
